Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 6th at Sunnyside Adventist Care Home in Saskatoon. She will forever be missed by her family and everyone who knew her. Mom was a selfless and loving, beautiful soul.
Mom was born in Maryfield, the eldest daughter of Reverand John and Louise Wilkinson. As her father was a United Church minister, she moved often, living in Maryfield, Gainsborough, Plenty and completing her secondary education in Foam Lake. She took her teacher training in Saskatoon at Normal School and would later teach at Killarney School, 8 miles east of Nokomis. With the school just a half-mile west from the Jim and Verna Smith family farm, Mom boarded at the Smith farm where she met her future husband, Lorne Smith. They married on July 7, 1943, and raised their family of 8 on the family homestead until 1967. They lived in Nokomis from 1967 until 2004, when they moved to Saskatoon.
Mom enjoyed travelling, including trips to Japan, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and throughout North America. She was active in the Nokomis United Church and Eastern Star. She loved her music playing the piano with her husband at many senior centers in the surrounding community. Most of all, mom truly loved her large family getting together as often as possible.
Widowed since 2006, Mom was predeceased by her parents, husband in 2006, son Doug, daughter-in-law Pat, sisters Jean Davidson and Velma McInnes and sister-in-law Pearl Smith and brothers-in-law Bob Davidson, Fergus McInnes , Don Aitken, Ed Banford and Gordon Smith.
She is survived by her seven children Elwood (Linda) Smith, Morris Smith, Barry (Debra) Smith, Wes (Michele) Smith, Marilyn (Jan) van der Velden, Eldeen (Dan) Borys, Kent Smith, daughter-in-law Sydney Smith, 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, sister Doreen Aitken, sister-in-law Verna Banford and eight nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Franklin Retirement Residence, where Mom and Dad resided from 2004 to 2018 and a special thank you to all the staff at Sunnyside Adventist Care Home who loved and cared for Mom these past four years.
The Funeral Service and Interment will take place in Nokomis at a later date. For online condolences, tributes, or to make a donation to the charity of your choice in Marjory Smith’s memory, please visit: https://fotheringham-mcdougall.com/
