Soon after His death, it would seem that His followers thought it was all over. They feared for their lives. His followers felt defeated. All they had hoped for was now buried in a tomb.
If Jesus had stayed dead, no one would have cared to make up a story. In the Bible, we actually read that Jesus’s followers went back to their jobs after His death. They went fishing!
If Jesus had stayed dead, no one would have started telling people He was alive. No one would believe that! Only crazy people talk that way!
If Jesus had stayed dead, there was no gain for His followers in telling people about Him. No money, no fame, no power—only loss.
But Jesus didn’t stay dead.
Three days after His death, some women expected to find Him in the tomb so they could embalm His dead body. But they didn’t find Him. Jesus did the unexpected and the unbelievable—He rose from the dead.
Jesus' followers didn’t have a choice but to tell the world the news: that Jesus was dead, but He rose to life. And anyone who follows Jesus now has the same task as His first followers. To tell others that Jesus was dead, but now He is alive; and all who believe in Him will live a new life, a different life—an eternal life.
