This made me think. Do we take time to pray for unity in our families, in our communities, in our province, in our country and the world? Unity does not mean there are no differences. Unity can be defined as oneness. Are we one as a human race, or are we divided? Yes, we have different races within the human race, but we are all human beings regardless of colour, sex, creed, geography, world views, etc. Where is our global oneness at? Unity can also be defined as a condition of harmony. Where is our global harmony at?
I am sure we have all heard of the expressions: “Divide and conquer”; “United we stand, divided we fall”; “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” They are hundreds of years old and some thousands of years old. Julius Caesar and Napoleon used the maxim “divide and conquer.” They basically got their opponents to fight among themselves. If we look at the human race as one, then we should have no opponent other than the devil himself. There is no reason to fight among ourselves other than evil itself. Differences shouldn’t be divisive. If we let our differences divide us, we are conquered as a human race. Jesus came to show us the way. He said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). Where in his teaching and actions do we ever hear that differences are divisive? In both deeds and words, Jesus taught love, compassion, mercy and forgiveness. If we center our lives both in words and action on these four basics, differences shouldn’t divide us, and we can move forward on being united.
Rather than using the pandemic, the environment, politics or any other situation as a divisive thing, let’s stand united as a human race. Let’s put humanity as a whole ahead of our personal desires, authority, views, etc. Jesus prayed for his disciples to be one. “I pray that they may all be one” (John 17:21). God created us (the human race) to be one with Him. Making an effort to become a little more loving, a little more compassionate, a little more forgiving, and a little more merciful will help move human unity forward. God Bless
