Darlene Sigda and Terry McDonald are new residents of the community of Govan. In 2021 they moved from Alberta, bringing their business model with them. Last Mountain Real Estate Services helps people deal with farm, acreage, residential and pre-estate downsizing when it may be too overwhelming for people, Sigda and Mcdonald have a combined experience of 30 years.
We are a unique business because we are a one-stop shop for a lot of farmers and for people who don't have any help at all." -Darlene Sigda
"...We go into farms and acreages... get rid of all of the stuff and get it cleaned up and ready for the client to put it up for sale or whatever they are going to do with it," said McDonald.
Some of their clients want to get a start on downsizing, and they contact them in advance to give them a hand. "We have a 40-foot trailer and a small zoom- boom that goes 14 feet… we have a small bobcat and a dump trailer." They recycle what they can and take what needs to go to the landfill. Every client has a different set of circumstances and a different amount of work that needs to be done. Terry said an average farm could have enough metal to cover the costs of the dump fees or even make money at the end of the job.
Often after cleaning up the site, an auction company will come in to disperse the property and the remaining belongings. It depends on what the client wants.
If a home needs cleaning and tidying, they will do that too. For other jobs like painting, they help connect the appropriate tradesperson with the client, "If somebody lives in California and they are the only family member and want to get (a home) painted and respectable for sale, we can find somebody and guide them through it," said McDonald.
Often a family member will come, take what they want and then direct where they want the balance to go, whether to a second-hand store or the landfill. If they come across something they think might be important, they will send a photo to the client and ask if they want it shipped. Sometimes family can't come out to the location, "We will clean the house out and send out the family heirlooms if they can't come and put them in a box for them or a few special photo albums and ship it to them or whatever it takes." said Mcdonald.
In their last job, they cleaned up 20 sheds, helping the person pile the rotten sheds and fencing to burn before the auction company came in.
A recent client, Alberta farmer Tim Hamm was thankful for taking care of an elderly neighbour's farm yard after they passed away, leaving Hamm as executor of the estate. Because the farm was quite disorganized with mostly scrap, he said at the time he thought, "What do I do?". That's when he contacted Sigda and Mcdonald. "They were really good. They really took care of the whole place…overall I was quite happy with what they did, and how they did it…" Sigda said they've been told many times " thank god we've hired you guys because we don't know anybody that would do that,"
